New Data Centers Are Generating Their Own Electricity and Managing Their Own Water
The explosive growth of AI-driven data centers has pushed operators to become more self-sufficient. Faced with grid delays and surging power demand, many new facilities now build their own electricity sources on-site or co-located, often called "bring your own power" or behind-the-meter generation.
Developers are pairing data centers with natural gas plants, fuel cells, solar arrays plus batteries, and even plans for small modular nuclear reactors. Examples include Equinix sites using on-site fuel cells and solar, Google’s co-located clean energy parks, and large Texas projects with gas turbines. In some cases, dozens of gigawatts of behind-the-meter capacity are in planning or development, allowing facilities to operate reliably without waiting years for grid connections. Water use is another area of growing independence. Traditional evaporative cooling can consume millions of gallons daily, but newer designs emphasize closed-loop systems, reclaimed wastewater, and alternative sources like treated effluent or brackish groundwater to reduce strain on municipal supplies. Innovative projects go further: one Texas 600 MW campus plans to use waste heat from power generation to produce usable water via atmospheric water generation technology. Many operators also commit to being water-positive, replenishing more water than they consume through conservation, recycling, and local projects. Advanced cooling methods like liquid immersion or geothermal further cut water needs. By taking control of both power and water, next-generation data centers aim to scale faster, improve reliability, and address sustainability concerns in an AI-powered world. This shift is reshaping energy and water infrastructure across the U.S. and beyond.
